ABOUT THE SHOW:
It's nearly impossible for one individual to look at another individual without forging a connection - even if the other individual is flattened in a photograph or is entirely abstracted. In 1955 Edward Steichen famously curated the exhibition The Family of Man, which examined the human figure through photography in an effort to explain one man to another. Another Stab commands this connection and has a similar goal in terms of exploring the figure. Unlike Steichen's photographers, however, the fifteen artists on view are not limited by medium, and they explore multiple avenues for making sense of the world it and ultimately for connecting to it.
While the context of this exhibition is an experimental contemporary art venue, the work on view doesn't frustrate or confuse the viewer. Several artists have appropriated images from mass culture and its collective presentation of art, making work that, although critically reflective of the imagery in today's visual culture, is nonetheless instantly recognizable.
Another Stab also aims to eliminate the "preciousness" of art. The traditional setting for an art object: bathed in light and given ample room to breathe. Video is often only heard through headphones. This quiet contemplation is absent here. The rapid production of art, the hustling of work and the competitiveness of the art market are nowhere near silent. Perhaps the presentation should not be either. |
